A Birthday Card

If I could send your birthday card to heaven, what would it say?

Growing up, we fought – poor Mom and Dad.

We were talented at creating chaos.

As we grew older, you were my protector,

watching out for me every time we left home.

You scared the boys away and never ratted me out

when one of my schemes went awry.

When you left for school, I was so proud of you –

my big brother, the college student.

You sacrificed sleep and gave your time freely

to your school, your church, and your friends.

I loved teasing you about getting older.

On your last birthday, I dared you

to spin while singing “You Are My Sunshine”

just to prove that you weren’t old.

And you did.

Then came the day

I answered the phone.

It wasn’t possible. You couldn’t be gone.

All I can do is trust in God’s plan.

I know you are safely home with Him,

but on your birthday, Joey

I long to see you again.

So what would I say if I could send a birthday card?

I love you, big brother. Happy birthday.

But it’s not fair that I’m now older than you.
